Wiki deutsch

Wiki english
Starting as an actress and member of the Comédie Français, Marguerite Durand gave up her career at the age of 24 for the marriage to a young lawyer with political ambitions. When the marriage was divorced only three years later, Maguerite had at least gained the possibility to start a completely new career in political journalism.

For her first employer, Le Figaro, she was supposed to write an article on the International Feminist Congress, basically as the critical voice from within. Instead she took away so much from this commission that she founded the daily feminist newspaper La Fronde in the following year. The newspaper was solely run by women and advocated the equality of women in a variety of areas.

In 1900, Durand set up the Congress for the Rights of Women at the World’s Fair in Paris, later she supported mainly the rights of working women by helping to organise several trade unions.
However, the feminist gained the largest publicity with her efforts to found a pet cemetery in Paris, where her own tame lion by the name of Tiger was laid to rest. With her archive of newspapers, which she had accumulated over the course of her life, the Bibliothèque Marguerite Durand was founded, an important source on the topic of feminism to this day.
