Wiki english
Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven had already lived an eventful romantic life before becoming the mother of Dada. Born in Swinemünde as Elsa Hildegard Plötz, early on she obviously strove for a more free and artistic life than the one of her parents. At 27 years she married the architect August Endell and lived in Berlin with him. The marriage opened for an affair Elsa’s with Endell’s friend Felix Paul Greve – the trio lived together in Palermo, but the marriage did not survive this modern approach to relationship. The Endells divorced and Elsa married Greve. After staging his suicide in Germany, he went to the US, called himself Frederick Philip Grove and thus escaped his debts. Elsa followed him there and the two lived off the maintenance of a farm for a while. At last, Greve left her as well and she began working as a model.

In this capacity she worked her way from rural Kentucky to New York, where – not yet divorced, but the marriage had factually ceased to exist – she married her third and final husband, Leopold von Freytag-Loringhoven.

In New York she rose as model, poet and artist, all the while supporting herself financially by working in a cigarette factory, to becoming a dadaist. For the longest time eclipsed by the male dominance in the artistic scene, it turns out that some of the most important pieces of ready-made art were her creation. Among others ‚God‚, which used to be assigned to Morton Livingstone Schamberg, and the epitome of ready-made, ‚Fountain‚ by (hitherto) Marcel Duchamp – von Freitag-Loringhoven had signed the urinal with R. Mutt and send it to him as a sculpture. She was also friends, if not more, with Djuna Barnes and Peggy Guggenheim.
There is no doubt the installation pictured below, Portrait of Marcel Duchamp, is her work.

Hoping for economic improvement, von Freytag-Loringhoven went back to Berlin shortly after World War I, where she lived however in poverty and poor mental health. She was supported by some old friends and lovers and finally moved to Paris, where her situation improved shortly. Alas, she soon died of gas suffocation in her flat because someone had left open the gas pipe.
